The reason I made the piece was that I went on a visit to Japan, and visited several temples. Inside, they have cupboards which apparently are only opened once every fifty or a hundred years, and are said to contain ritual objects. I became fascinated by the idea that you could live your entire lifetime, and never see what was inside these cupboards, and never really be sure that there was actually anything in there. It gave me the idea to make this piece.
